Removable Partial and Complete Dentures

A Removable Partial Denture is a dental appliance that is used to replace one or more missing teeth.

How it works:  The false tooth (teeth) is held onto a metal framework with a tissue colored acrylic. The framework has clasp arms that grip on to certain existing teeth.

What is it like to wear a partial:  Many patients wear and function well with a Partial(s) without much difficulty. However, others do experience some problems, even with the best fitting appliance. There is no accurate way to predict how well any particular patient will do in advance.

Will it fit tight:  That will vary on the number, location and shape of the teeth that are used to help retain the partial.

Will a Partial affect eating or talking:  Studies show that a patient loses about 1/3 of their potential chewing forces when using a Removable Partial. Thus eating is slower. Also, food will tend to collect more around the Partial. Speech is affected because the amount of room the tongue has to move in is reduced. These problems do get better.

Remember, there are many patients wearing partials these days that are doing fine. With time, effort and patience, you have a great opportunity to have a very positive result. Also, replacing teeth that are presently missing or broken down is always a positive thing to do, resulting in positive results.

How long will a Partial last:  it is our hope that it would last forever. But, we cannot predict what will happen to the supporting teeth. Also, damage can occur to the Partial itself, which could make it unusable.

How long does it take to make a Partial:  Generally 3 to 4 appointments over a period of about 4 to 5 weeks.

Are there other ways to replace the missing teeth:  Fixed bridges or implants can be used to replace missing teeth in a variety of situations. The use of them, rather that a partial, depends on the location of the missing tooth (teeth), condition of the surrounding teeth (if there are any), and the condition of the underlying bone.
